Hi there lovely friends!

There is something very satisfying about watching a colourwork chart turn into stitches on your needles. When I set out to design a rose inspired pattern I had something quite different in mind. Instead, I created something more delicate that captures the understated elegance that a rose plant can bring to a garden – the Delicate Rose Cowl.

We have several rose plants that sit quietly around our garden. Every year they produce many beautiful blooms amongst the backdrop of chaos that two young children create. The oldest rose is a Queen Elizabeth that grew from a a cutting over 30 years ago, and was planted by my husbands Grandmother. It smells divine and one of its flowers this year is in the photos below, along with some of the pink toadflax that also grows here.

You can find the pattern ready for your winter stash here on Ravelry or here on Gumroad.

About the Design

The Delicate Rose Cowl is a stranded colorwork project that pairs structured geometric leaf shaped trellis with the gentle beauty of a rose stem.

Knitted in two strongly contrasting shades—a rich pink and a crisp white—the motifs create a quite understated design across the fabric.

Pattern Details

  • Difficulty: Intermediate (Great for those who enjoy reading colorwork charts and managing floats).
  • Skills Used: Working in the round, basic ribbing, stranded colorwork using two colours at a time, and reading a chart.
  • Materials Needed:
    • Your favourite cosy DK weight yarn in two highly contrasting colours (a solid or crisp semi-solid works best so the colourwork motifs show up)
    • 4mm circular knitting needles – 60cm length
    • Stitch markers
    • A darning needle for weaving in your ends

Key Features:

  • Completely Seamless – Worked entirely in the round from the bottom up, so there is no sewing or assembly required at the end.
  • Neat Finished Edges – Framed with classic 2×2 ribbing at both the top and bottom edges to keep the cowl perfectly in shape and prevent rolling.
  • Versatile Styling – Designed to fit comfortably around the neck, it pairs equally well with casual sweaters or dressy coats.

Sample Shown:

The sample shown uses two contrasting DK weight yarns.

The main colour is a slightly variegated hand dyed yarn with pinks, purples, and apricot colours. It is called Profoundly Important Work on the Fated Yarns Washford base – a 100g/225m skein of 100% Superwash Merino. Whilst this particular yarn is discontinued, many hand dyers use the same base in their craft. The sample used approximately 66g.

The contrast colour is a solid white yarn called Drops Lima. It is a 65% Wool and 35% Alpaca blend that pairs beautifully with the hand dyed colours. The sample used approximately 25g.
